POWER POLL

For customers truly to appreciate and make good use of a smarter electric system, they need to have a basic level of knowledge about the new technologies coming online, and they need to have confidence that these systems are secure.

The Edison Electric Institute’s third quarter 2012 “Power Poll” found that 46 percent of customers say they have heard the term “smart grid.” Awareness has remained basically at that level for the last three quarters. On the brighter side, among customers familiar with the smart grid, levels of knowledge have risen. Nearly six in ten customers who are aware of the smart grid say they have some understanding of it, with many (53 percent) saying they have a basic idea of what it is and how it would work. Six percent say they have a fairly complete understanding. The overall level of smart grid knowledge is up 7 percentage points from a year ago.
