Electric Companies Preserve and Protect Endangered Species

Today, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service observes the 7th annual Endangered Species Day, which provides an opportunity to learn about the importance of protecting endangered species and the everyday actions that we can take to help protect our nation’s disappearing wildlife.

EEI’s member companies play an important role in preserving and protecting endangered species. Through their power plants, substations, and other facilities, electric companies own and manage hundreds of thousands of acres of land. Electric utility transmission and distribution rights-of-way offer important habitat and migration corridors for many types of plants and wildlife. They also create “edge” or border habitats necessary for the survival of many birds and small mammals.

In addition to complying with the Endangered Species Act, companies are taking many voluntary actions to protect threatened and endangered species and critical habitats on their lands.
