LAS VEGAS (June 19, 2024) — The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) today awarded EDP with the 2024 International Edison Award. Presented annually and selected by a panel of former energy industry executives, the Edison Award is the electric power industry’s highest honor. The award was presented in Las Vegas during EEI 2024, the institute’s annual meeting and thought leadership forum.
EDP’s Alqueva Park—an innovative hybrid hydropower, floating solar, and battery storage project located in southern Portugal—has Europe’s largest floating solar energy production facility in a dam reservoir. The project consists of 12,000 solar panels supported by 25,000 floats, which can generate 7.5 gigawatt-hours of clean energy each year. That’s roughly 30 percent of the annual energy usage of the region or the equivalent of around 1,500 households.
EDP is a global energy leader with a presence in four regions across the globe – Europe, South America, North America, and the Asia-Pacific – and this project in Alqueva is in line with EDP's strategy to be 100 percent green by 2030 and to increase investment in innovation and renewable projects.
“EEI’s member companies are committed to delivering resilient clean energy to customers in the United States and around the world,” said EEI President and CEO Dan Brouillette. “EDP’s Alqueva Park is the first Portuguese power plant to demonstrate the benefits of hydropower, solar, and battery storage sharing the grid connection point, and the project was developed with the needs of the local community in mind. I applaud EDP for its leadership and congratulate them for winning this prestigious award.”
“We are honored to receive the 2024 International Edison Award, which recognizes EDP’s commitment to innovation and sustainability,” stated Ana Paula Marques, EDP’s executive board member. “Alqueva Park is a landmark project that showcases the potential of combining various renewable energy sources and technologies to deliver reliable and affordable clean energy to our customers and communities. We are incredibly proud to contribute to the energy transition across the globe.”
